#1 John Paul Campbell punched two bridesmaids at his wedding reception.
John Paul Campbell, 27, attacked his new wife Nicola’s best friend and mother of two Samantha Dewar. She had stepped in to break-up a fight between him and another bridesmaid at Masonic Hall in Macclesfield, Cheshire.After hitting the bridesmaid he originally got into an argument with, Rachel Walsh – his new bride’s cousin, Campbell punched Ms Dewar ‘full in the face’ and sent her flying to the floor in the ‘unprovoked attack’.
#2 Fractured cheekbone.
Samantha suffered a fractured cheekbone and had to have a metal plate inserted to reconstruct her cheek following the incident in the wedding venue’s car park. Campbell, who works as a printer, has now pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm at Macclesfield Magistrates’ Court. No charges were brought in relation to the argument with Ms Walsh, her wife’s cousin.
#3 It started out as a bicker.
Nicola, John’s wife, says that Ms Dewar shouldn’t have ‘got involved’ in the earlier dispute, which had been settled before her former school friend started ‘mouthing off’.’It started out as a bicker between myself, my husband and my cousin, who was also a bridesmaid,’ said Mrs Campbell, who is currently on maternity leave from her job as a beauty therapist after having her son, Finley, nine months and also has a daughter Lily-Mae, five.
#4 Stepping in.
‘It was the end of the night of our wedding and we were bickering about how we were getting home.’One thing led to another and there was a bit of a scuffle between us. There was a lot of shoving and a few punches got thrown about between my cousin and John. John’s cousin Jamie led John away to calm him down. It was all resolved but then Sammy came over and got involved after we had told her to leave him alone. She said “what the f*** has gone on?” and she was mouthing off, and John turned round and hit her. He didn’t mean to do it. He regretted it straightaway and he regrets it now.’ She added: ‘I know what he did was wrong but he is not a violent person. We had all had a drink and I’m not saying what he did was right but I am standing by him. I love him and that’s why I married him. I am there for him through thick and thin.
#5 A big mistake.
‘He has always looked after me and my children, this was just one incident and a big mistake. He has admitted it and it is up to the courts what happens next.’It was a beautiful wedding day and we had been organising it for a year. ‘I feel so sorry for John for what has happened, and I’m sorry for Sammy for the injuries she has received. It was just stupid and it never should have happened. We just want to get the court case over with and move on.’ Macclesfield Crown Court heard Campbell had first got into a row with his wife’s cousin at his the wedding reception on September 13 last year. It was then that Ms Dewar stepped in to try and calm things down, only to end up being punched to the ground.
#6 Best friends with the bride.
Prosecutor Debbie Byrne, said: ‘This was an unprovoked attack which left a serious injury.’It was the defendant’s wedding and the complainant was the bridesmaid. The male got into an argument with another female witness.’She strikes him and he strikes her. The complainant approached the groom from behind and was shouting and he turned around and without warning punched her to the face, knocking her to the ground.’Defending, Lisa Morton said: ‘It’s a one punch scenario. It’s a serious matter and there’s no getting away from that.’Campbell will now be sentenced at Chester Crown Court in due course. Speaking after the hearing, Ms Dewar, who lives in Macclesfield with her baby, three-year-old daughter and fiancé, said she had been friends with the bride since they attended school together.However, she said they had not spoken since the incident at the wedding last autumn.She said: ‘We’ve been best friends since school and I helped her get ready for the wedding. I can’t believe what’s happened, I’ve lost my best friend.”
#7 The incident occurred during Campbell’s wedding reception at Masonic Hall in Riseley Street, Macclesfield
‘It’s been a nightmare. Everyone was having a nice time at the reception and it was at the end outside in the car park when it happened. ‘He punched me in the face out of nowhere and knocked me to the floor. It was all so quick and all I can remember is waking up on the floor in agony.’I couldn’t open my eye. The swelling was awful and I couldn’t feel my face. I still can’t feel down the side of my face and just hope it will get better. ‘I’m more nervous of people now and it’s affected my confidence. I’ve been scared to go out and be alone in the house. It was such a forceful punch and it’s scary to think what could have happened.’
